WHEEL BEARINGS

WHAT ARE WHEEL BEARINGS?

Wheel bearings are what allow your wheel to turn on the hub assembly.  Some are inner and outer wheel bearings and others a hub assembly.

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

Place your mouse over the picture to see a wheel bearing hub assembly.  Some wheel bearings are an inner and outer bearing as shown here and others are a hub assembly as shown when you place your mouse over the picture

  • The most common sign of a wheel bearing that requires attention is a humming and or grinding noise when driving.  This is usually louder from one side or the other when making turns.

  • You may also notice a shimmy in the steering wheel or a pulsation in the brakes when applied.  Due to the wheel bearing being loose this would allow the rotor to move causing a pulsation or shimmy.

  • Your tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles or 10,000 km and a front end inspection should be performed at the same time.  During this inspection the technician will inspect for wheel bearing play and or noise.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not having your front end inspected every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km could be the cause of an accident due to a component failure.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your brakes inspected every 6,000 miles or 10,000 km when your tires are being rotated to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
