POWER STEERING HOSES

WHAT ARE POWER STEERING HOSES?

Power steering hoses consist of two separate hoses.  One of those being the pressure hose and the other the return

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

Place your mouse over the picture to see a power steering pump.  A power steering return line is usually made only of rubber rather than having the metal portions that the pressure hose does

  • Most of today's vehicles will or may have power steering fluid cooler lines as well.  These lines will be made of metal and run to or near the radiator for the purpose of cooling the fluid before putting it back into the system

  • You may notice a puddle of clear of red / pink fluid leaking from under the engine compartment area of your vehicle.  You may also hear a whining or humming sound when you turn your steering wheel without maxing it to the end points in which case you would hear this noise anyway

  • Your power steering lines and hoses should be inspected every 3 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km when in for regular maintenance to ensure that they are not leaking or cracking

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing your power steering hoses when they are leaking or seeping is likely to result in the loss of power steering completely.  Loss of all fluid in the system will cause damage to other components as well.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your power steering hoses inspected every 3 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km when your tires are being rotated to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
