POWER STEERING PUMP

WHAT IS A POWER STEERING PUMP?

The power steering pump is what pumps the fluid for the power steering from the reservoir to the other components in the system

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

  • In most cases a power steering pump that is causing a problem will be evident by the whining or humming noise that you hear when turning

  • You may notice a rattling, grinding or scraping noise from a pump that is having a problem with the pulley or bearings that turn in order to drive the pump.  You may also notice that the steering is more stiff than it usually is

  • Your power steering system is the highest pressure system in system in your vehicle and as such fluid will leak very quickly in most cases.  Your power steering components are checked at each oil change.  Make sure that your vehicle is in for regular servicing every 3 months / 3,000 mile or 5,000 km to avoid a more serious problem

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing a failing power steering component can result in a total loss of power steering.  A total loss of power assist could be the cause of an accident.  Lack of flow from the power steering pump due to its failure or the loss of the fluid is also likely to cause damage to other components in the system.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your power steering inspected every 3 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km when your engine oil is being changed to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
