PITMAN ARM

WHAT IS A PITMAN ARM?

The pitman arm is connected to the steering box on a spline and then runs to the centre link to control the steering

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

The centre link is then connected to the inner tie rod ends.  Place your mouse over the picture to see an inner tie rod end

  • You will most likely be made aware of the need for replacement of the pitman arm during a regular inspection of your vehicles front end components done when you are in for servicing

  • You may notice a clunk or tick when turning or perhaps even a sloppy feeling in the steering if the pitman arm is worn badly enough without having been caught during an inspection

  • Your vehicle should be in for regular servicing every 3 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km and a front end inspection done at that time.  A pitman arm that fails would leave you with no steering at all.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing your pitman arm or other front end components before they are worn out is likely to cause other front end parts to wear out prematurely.  A pitman arm that fails is likely to be the cause of an accident.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your front end inspected every 3 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km when your vehicle is in for regular servicing to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
