PARKING BRAKE CABLE

WHAT ARE PARK BRAKE CABLES?

Parking brake cables are the cables that run from your park brake lever or pedal to the actual park brake in order to apply it

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

This picture shows both ends of the cable.  As you can see the cable is covered in a plastic shield to protect it from corrosion.

  • The most common sign of park brake cable adjustment or replacement being required is when the pedal or lever starts to move further than it used to

  • You may find that the emergency brake is not holding at all even when applied with full force.  This may be a sign that adjustment is required or it may be that replacement is necessary.

  • Your tires should be rotated every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km and a brake inspection should be performed at the same time since the tires are off of the vehicle anyway.  During this inspection the technician will inspect for proper operation of the emergency brake cables.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not having your brakes inspected every 6,000 miles or 10,000 km could be the cause of an accident due to a brake component failure.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your brakes inspected every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km when your tires are being rotated to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
