FUEL FILTER

WHAT IS A FUEL FILTER?

A fuel filter is the filter that the fuel passes through before being taken into the engine to be burned

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

The fuel filter is a metal canister with a cardboard like material inside of it.  This filters the fuel of any dirt or impurities before it reaches the fuel injectors.

  • Most of today's vehicles have an in-line fuel filter.  This filter is usually located about three quarters of the way back on the vehicles fuel line running from the tank to the fuel rail.  Replacement should be done approximately every 12 months / 12,000 miles or 20,000 km

  • You may notice a slight hesitation or a lack of power due to a plugged or partially plugged fuel filter

  • Most often you will know that it is time simply based on mileage or when a technician let's you know that it is time for replacement due to tune up or drivability problems that you may be experiencing

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing your fuel filter when it is time will cause a rough run, hesitation or lack of power on acceleration.  A fuel filter that is completely clogged will cause a vehicle to not run at all.  A plugged fuel filter may be the cause of premature wear on other components such as the fuel pump.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your fuel filter replaced every 12 months / 12 miles or 20,000 km to prevent any undue wear or avoidable break downs.
