BRAKE PADS

WHAT ARE BRAKE PADS?

Brake pads are the friction material that bring your vehicle to a stop.  They work with a caliper system.  Brake shoes do the same but with a drum system.

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

Place your mouse over this picture to see how brake pads fit into the caliper assembly and are applied to the rotor in order to cause the friction that brings your vehicle to a stop.

  • In most cases you will not know that it is time for new brake pads until it is too late as most pads no longer have a warning or squeeler tab on them.

  • You may notice a squeeling or grinding noise from them when they are at the point of being "metal to metal."  By this point it is likely that the rotors have been damaged and will need replacement as well.

  • A sure sign that your brakes need attention is a pulsating feeling from the brake pedal when applied.  This is caused by rotors that are warped or out of round.

  • Your brakes should be inspected every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km for wear and condition.  This will ensure your safety as well as help save you from sub sequential damage.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing brake pads before they are worn out completely will cause the brake pedal to sink or fade.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your brakes inspected every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km when your oil is being changed to avoid any further cost.
