BRAKE DRUM

WHAT IS A BRAKE DRUM?

Brake drums are the what the brake shoes ride against to bring your vehicle to a stop

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

Place your mouse over the picture to see a brake shoe (what rides inside the drum - often referred to as friction material)

  • Brake drums will require replacement when they are too thin or too ridged to machine to a smooth surface and still remain thick enough to be considered safe (they must be inspected to know when they require replacement).

  • You may notice a pulsation from the vehicle that would tell you that the drums may be out of round (warped).  This feels as if you are applying more and then less pressure on the pedal even though you're not.  This should be attended to as soon as possible

  • Your tires should be rotated every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km and a brake inspection should be performed at the same time since the tires are off of the vehicle anyway

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing you brake shoes before they are worn out is likely to cause drum replacement being required.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your brakes inspected every 6 months / 6,000 miles or 10,000 km when your tires are being rotated to ensure your safety as well as avoid any further cost.
