ALTERNATOR

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATOR?

Your alternator or generator as it is often called is the device that creates electrical current to run you headlamps and other accessories as well as the power needed to create spark for the engine

How will I know when it's time for replacement?

Place your mouse over the picture of the alternator to see a side view of this showing the pulley where the belt would ride

  • An alternator that is not working properly is sometimes detected as a "slow to crank" condition when trying to start the vehicle

  • You may also notice a charging warning light coming on within the instrument panel - this is usually red in color

  • You may also notice a problem with a rough running or hesitation concern if the alternator cannot create enough power for spark to the engine.

  • Your alternator is usually tested for proper operation when your vehicle is in for a regular maintenance package.  This does not guaranty how long it will last but rather that it does not require attention at the time the test was done.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Not replacing an alternator that is failing a charging system (A.V.R.) test will result in a stalling condition where the vehicle will not restart.  This may also cause battery damage.  This is one of the many instances where sub sequential damage may add up to being more than the cost of the original repair.  Have your charging system checked every 6 months / 3,000 miles or 5,000 km when your vehicle is in for regular servicing.
